Signify N.V., formerly known as Philips Lighting N.V., is a prominent Dutch multinational specializing in lighting solutions. The company was established on May 3, 2016, following its spin-off from Royal Philips, a conglomerate with a rich history dating back to 1891. This strategic move allowed Signify to focus exclusively on the lighting industry, leveraging over a century of expertise to innovate and lead in both professional and consumer lighting markets.
The company’s origins are deeply rooted in Philips’ initial endeavors, which began with the production of incandescent lamps in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. This foundational experience has been instrumental in shaping Signify’s current position as a leader in lighting technology. In 2018, to reflect its new identity and direction, Philips Lighting rebranded itself as Signify, though it continues to produce products under the Philips brand, maintaining a strong connection to its legacy.
Signify’s product portfolio is diverse, encompassing electric lights, light fixtures and control systems designed for both consumer and professional applications. The company has been at the forefront of integrating lighting solutions with the Internet of Things (IoT), offering connected lighting systems that enhance energy efficiency and user experience.
Brands such as Philips Hue, Color Kinetics and WiZ are part of Signify’s extensive offerings, catering to a wide range of lighting needs.
Over the years, Signify has strategically expanded its capabilities through acquisitions. Notably, in 2019, the company acquired WiZ Connected, a Hong Kong-based provider of Wi-Fi connected lighting solutions, strengthening its position in the smart lighting market. Further expansion occurred in 2020 with the acquisition of Cooper Lighting Solutions for $1.4 billion, enhancing Signify’s footprint in the North American professional lighting market.
In 2021, the company acquired Telensa, a UK-based smart street lighting controls company, further solidifying its leadership in connected lighting solutions.
As of 2023, Signify reported revenues of €6.70 billion, with an operating income of €0.37 billion and a net income of €0.22 billion. The company’s assets totaled €8.00 billion and it employed approximately 33,090 individuals worldwide.
Headquartered in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Signify continues to lead the lighting industry, focusing on innovation, sustainability and the development of smart lighting solutions that contribute to a more connected and energy-efficient world.
