Stelco is currently hiring a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join the Mobile Equipment Department at the Lake Erie Works facility. This individual will be responsible for the diagnosis, repair, maintenance and servicing of mobile equipment.
Since safety is a core value at Stelco, the selected candidate must prioritize safe work practices while also ensuring adherence to all company policies and regulations. Additionally, the role requires oversight of contractor/vendor safety protocols when supporting maintenance efforts.
Primary Responsibilities
A Heavy Equipment Mechanic plays a crucial role in keeping mobile machinery operational. This involves troubleshooting issues, conducting repairs and performing preventative maintenance.
Key duties include:
- Diagnosing Mechanical Issues – Operate machinery to identify and confirm equipment defects and ensure successful repairs are executed.
- Assembly, Inspection and Maintenance – Plan, direct and conduct inspections, lubrication, testing and servicing of various types of mobile equipment.
- Staying Up to Date – Continuously update knowledge about new or modified equipment, emerging industry trends and advancements in repair techniques.
- Documentation and Record-Keeping – Maintain clear, accurate reports on performed repairs, completed inspections and findings.
- Reading and Analyzing Technical Documents – Interpret blueprints, schematics, sketches and manuals to diagnose and repair hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical and electrical systems.
- Housekeeping and Safety – Maintain a clean and organized workspace to reduce hazards and maintain safety standards.
Job Qualifications
To be eligible for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- 421A Heavy Duty Mechanic Certificate of Qualification OR 310T Truck and Coach Technician Certification with relevant experience.
- 3 to 5 years of hands-on experience in the maintenance and repair of heavy equipment.
- 310S Automotive Technician Certification may be considered for candidates with significant experience in a related field.
- Ozone Depletion Certificate (ODC) is a plus but not mandatory.
